The region’s smartphone users are beginning to move toward ‘mobile only’ content consumption, as mobile apps overtake traditional features of a mobile phone such as calls, email and messaging, it was revealed in a recent study by The Nielsen Company.

As mobile enthusiasts gear up for the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona next month, the Middle East is seeing more and more  smartphone apps made specifically for the region’s market – with the UAE the hub of this fast-growing industry.

Mobile phone maker Motorola has already identified the rapid growth of region-relevant apps as an emerging trend across the Middle East this year.

“Consumers want localised and regionalised content on their smartphones and marketing products that have no local content simply does not appeal,” said Mahmoud Sayed Ahmed, marketing director for mobile devices at Motorola Middle East.

Sand, Sea and Scratches are Concerns for UAE Mobile Users

According to a survey of mobile phone users in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), busy outdoor lifestyles can mean that their handsets are at risk of being damaged by the elements such as sand, sea water, and scratches.

When questioned in the YouGov Siraj poll, 18 percent of respondents said scratches to the screen were a primary element that could damage their handset, while 17 percent said damage from being knocked due to their phone being constantly in and out of their pockets, rucksack or handbag was a major concern.

A further 12 percent were concerned about water, such as the sea, coming into contact with their phones and five percent feared sand and dust particles getting into the handset. A total of 47 percent of respondents said that all of the combined UAE elements were cause for worry when it came to their phones.
